Ten years after the release of its first opus, the franchise The Last of Us is one of the most acclaimed and popular in video gaming. No wonder his universe is now declining, with the arrival of a promising series produced by the American channel HBO (Game Of Thrones, The Sopranos).
What about the actors? What will be the plot? When will the series be released? On which platform? Here is a summary of everything you need to know about this promising series.
What is the story of the series?
This new series will take over the plot of the first game The Last of Usreleased in 2013 on Playstation 3.
In the near, post-apocalyptic future, an epidemic caused by a fungus has ravaged civilization, turning humans into violent “infected”. Twenty years later, the disillusioned Joel accepts a dangerous mission: to take the young Ellie across the United States, to a safe place.
How many episodes are planned?
The first season of the series will consist of ten episodes, which should be released on a weekly basis. The show apparently has a very comfortable budget of $200 million.
What release date?
Originally slated for release in 2022, the production of the series has experienced numerous delays due – ironically – to the Covid-19 pandemic. While no specific date has yet been announced, the series The Last of Us will finally be released in early 2023.
Who is in charge of the series?
Produced by HBO and Playstation Production, the series is co-created by Neil Druckmann (The Last of Us, Uncharted) and Craig Mazin (Chernobyl). As showrunners, the two men take care of the writing of the series, as well as the general artistic direction.
As a reminder, Neill Druckmann is the original screenwriter and one of the directors of the games The Last of Us, and we can therefore expect respect for the original material. However, he admitted to having taken some liberties in the adaptation, but indicated that he had kept “the philosophical subtext of history”.
The last mentioned is none other than the screenwriter and one of the main directors of the games The Last of Us. It is therefore difficult to find a better connoisseur of the franchise and its universe. He should be able to breathe the spirit of video game opuses into the series and make a successful adaptation of it. Anyway, let’s hope so.
Among the directors of the series are the promising filmmakers Kantemir Balagov (A tall girl), Peter Hoar (Daredevil), Ali Abbasi (Border), Jeremy Webb (Umbrella Academy) or even Neill Druckmann himself.
Finally, in production we find in particular Carolyn Strauss (Game Of Thrones, Chernobyl) and Evan Wells, president of Naughty Dogs.

Where to watch the series?
The Last of Us will be broadcast in the United States on the HBO Max platform (or its equivalent). In France, although the majority of HBO content is broadcast on OCS, this situation could change in the coming months.
The postponement of the arrival of HBO Max in France has reshuffled the cards, and if a broadcast on OCS is likely, the series may as well arrive on Amazon Prime Video, in particular following a recent deal with Warner.
In all cases, Digital will keep you informed.
