Series The Last of Us was expected at the turn by video game fans, but no one could have predicted that it would be the soap opera everyone is talking about at the start of 2023. It had made a great start from its start on the 15th January, and while the last episode of season 1 aired this weekend, HBO gave an update on the evolution of its success.
The number of spectators on HBO And HBO Max during the first broadcast night has almost never stopped growing, going from 4.17 to 8.2 million from 1st to 9th episode, in the USA alone. A very nice score, especially since the last episode was broadcast at the same time as the 95th awards ceremony. Oscarsbut for information, it is below the finale of season 1 of House of the Dragon and its 9.3 million spectators, and a thousand leagues from the end of Game Of Thrones which brought together 19.3 million people live across the Atlantic alone.
But the craze didn’t stop with viewing on the first night, as the first six episodes currently total an average of 30.4 million views in the United States, and the first one surpassed 40 million views. In Europe and Latin America, in territories where HBO Max, The Last of Us is quite simply the broadcaster’s most viewed series in history, ahead of House of the Dragon.
Now, time to wait and film season 2, the production of which has already been confirmed. Moreover, the series should not stop there, because Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have confirmed to QG thatthey wanted to tell the story of The Last of Us: Part II through more than one season. If the success is still there, which it is difficult to doubt, so there should be at least a season 3.
People are also speculating how Season 2 will encompass such an important game. Will the next season cover the whole course of the second game?
- Mazin: [secoue la tête] No. No way.
- Druckmann: It will be more than one season.
Can you tell us if it will be two or three seasons?
- Mazin: You rightly noted that we won’t say how many. But more than one is factually correct. [Rires].
