HBO surprises its world (not at all) by renewing the already very profitable series The Last of Us for a second season.

After all, if the premiere covers the first game and its additional content in 9 episodes, there is still Part II To adapt. But it could be done in two parts. To explain this eventuality, we have to set foot on the slippery slope of the spoiler.

The Last of Us Part II in two parts at HBO?

Strict warning therefore for those who have never played the games The Last of Us and wish to keep the surprise. Turn off your screen or skip the next two paragraphs, and barricade yourself to prevent the infected from spoiling you. It’s done ? So let’s continue.

As veterans know, the plot of The Last of Us Part II is itself divided into two parts. If we are not going to go into too much detail, at least we can say that, roughly, we play as Ellie for a large half of the game, then a second protagonist named Abby in the second half.

Craig Mazin, co-director of the adaptation series at HBO, commented on the subject of adapting this second game: He deserves more than just one season. It’s a big chunk to digest, as it paints a much denser and more complex story. We could thus count on an entire season centered on Ellie and another on Abby. Unless Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann surprise us again, in a good way.

An infectious craze

Anyway, the renewal of the series The Last of Us for a second and possible third season couldn’t be more logical. After an explosive start, the first season, which currently has 3 episodes accessible to the general public, continues to make headlines. According to HBO, the first episode was seen on its platform by 22 million American viewers. This is therefore without counting the total audience in the rest of the world and on other platforms, whose figures must probably prove to be… pandemic.

Craig Mazin has also expressed himself on this point: “ I am so grateful to Neil Druckmann and HBO for this partnership, and even more so to the millions of people who have joined us on this journey. The ratings gave us the chance to keep going, and as a fan of the characters Neil and Naughty Dog have created, I couldn’t be more ready to dive back into it. So do we, Craig, so do we.

But, if there are two more seasons, will that give Naughty Dog time to develop a for now eventual The Last of Us Part III, which HBO will certainly be quick to adapt? Only the future will tell us.
