While the first season of The Last of Us at HBO has just ended, the showrunners are already thinking about the sequel.
In 9 episodes, this one adapted the plot of the first game on the small screen. The Last of Us Part II to adapt, and a second season would obviously not be enough according to Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann.
The Last of Us Part II in several parts
In an interview with GQ Magazine, the two showrunners thus returned to a first season with enormous critical and commercial success and to what awaits us for the future. The opportunity for us to issue a massive SPOILER alert, both on the first season and on The Last of Us Part II.
Those wishing not to be disclosed important elements of the work would therefore do better to go their way and simply remember that the adaptation of the second opus will require at least two parts. These precautions taken, here is what should be remembered from this interview.
As a reminder, the controversial story in more than one way of The Last of Us Part II cuts itself into two parts: a large half of the game puts us in the skin of Ellie, and the second in that of Abby, for reasons on which we will not expand. Still, it takes roughly twice as long to finish the second opus compared to the more linear plot of The Last of Us first of the name.
An adaptation that takes liberties
As we have seen in this first season, the showrunners have repeatedly made script choices aimed at establishing a clear distinction between the series and the game from which it is inspired. It would therefore not be surprising if the adaptation of The Last of Us Part II follow the same path.
This could take several forms, notably in the chronology of events. The game released in 2020 presented a plot unfolding over several days, from the point of view of two characters with intertwined destinies. Flashbacks of the two protagonists intervened regularly to add context or operate a cut after a strong event.
Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann will therefore have to juggle all these elements to adapt this second part, and we will have to expect at least two seasons in this direction. ” There are some things that will be added and enriched, and others that will be reversed “warns us Craig Mazin. Small bonus for those who believe that the first season was a bit (a lot?) low in Infected: the next ones should see them grow… like mushrooms. Enough… to chatter your teeth with impatience at the idea of a season 2 which, we hope, will arrive quickly.
