The Last of Us: the HBO series explodes audiences and signs a record


Series The Last of Us confirms its success. After being HBO’s second-best start in more than 10 years, the video game adaptation just hit a record high. Its second episode (aired Sunday, January 22) led to the biggest ratings gain for an original drama series in the history of the American network.

In France, The Last of Us is broadcast on the Amazon Prime Video streaming platform.

According to figures from the Nielsen agency, which calculates audiences across the Atlantic, episode 2 of The Last of Us recorded 5.7 million viewers on HBO and the HBO Max platform. An increase of 22% compared to the first episode which brought together 4.7 million people.

For comparison, this is (obviously) less than House of the Dragonwhich had recorded 10.2 million viewers for its episode 2, but much more than season 2 ofEuphoriawent from 2.4 million during its first episode to 6.6 for its grand finale.

Last week, HBO had already testified to the success of the series by announcing that episode 1 had totaled 10 million spectators in just two days. The channel has since updated this figure and announced that the inaugural episode continued to garner viewership: “After a full week of availability, Episode 1 now has 18 million viewers, nearly four times more than the night it aired.”

These results confirm the popularity of the license The Last of Uswhose games have sold more than 37 million copies since the release of the first opus in 2013.

As a reminder, the series evolves in the near and post-apocalyptic future, following an epidemic caused by a fungus and which has ravaged civilization, transforming humans into violent infected. 20 years later, Joel, a disillusioned man, accepts a perilous mission: to accompany the young Ellie across the United States to a safe place.

The Last of Us consists of nine episodes broadcast in France on Amazon Prime Video, at the rate of one per week, available every Monday.
