The Last of Us: the showrunner teases Abby with a poster

Now that season 2 of The Last of Us is approaching, expect to hear about Abby’s character. It is to her that Neil Druckmann, the showrunner, refers in his last tweet.

While season 1 of The Last of Us ended on Monday March 13, 2023, we are already looking to the future and season 2. We will have to wait until the end of 2024, or even the beginning of 2025, to discover these next episodes. But, Neil Druckmann, coshowrunner of the series and president of the Naughty Dog studio, did not wait for the teaser.

On his Twitter account, and from March 19, 2023he posted a poster dedicated to season 2. We see an arm with a hammer… it’s a character to come who will change everything.

There is no actress for Abby yet.

This arm belongs to Abby. This character has never appeared in the series before, in season 1, as she was not in the first game either. The Last of Us. On the other hand, the entire plot of The Last of Us Part II rests on it. And, this is a — brutal — story of revenge. She is particularly recognizable via the poster due to her very muscular physique.

In reality, this poster isn’t new either: it’s the poster that was released in 2017 as a teaser for the Part II (we were then three years before the release). Abby’s existence was completely unknown at the time, and fans thought that muscular arm belonged to Joel. That’s probably a nod from Neil Druckmann, to show that the show will follow the same path — with an actress of a similar build.

Unlike Dina, who will be played by Paolina van Kleef (the actress making a cameo in episode 6 of season 1), Abby’s casting is not yet known. Very early however, some rumors were born around the Australian actress Shannon Berry (The Wilds), due to the rather striking physical resemblance. And, also, because she follows the account of The Last of Us on Instagram, also being followed by Neil Druckmann. These “clues” remain quite thin, however.

It remains to be seen how well the adaptation will follow the game. The artbook of The Last of Us Part II revealed that there was an early version of the script, quite different in how Abby was introduced into Joel and Ellie’s lives. Perhaps, to surprise the players as well, the HBO team will opt for a variant.
