The Last of Us: these 2 songs from episode 7 are not a detail

There are two musical references, in episode 7 of The Last of Uswhich are important nods to video games.

Each episode has its share of winks – sometimes even on the future of the characters. In episode 6, The Last of Us was particularly filled with references to the game The Last of Us Part II. Episode 7, broadcast on February 27, 2023 on Prime Video in France, also contains two musical references that are enough to capsize the hearts of fans.

Attention, the rest of the article contains spoilers on episode 7 and on a (non-determining) moment of The Last of Us Part II.

Take On Me, a-ha

When Ellie takes the escalator for the first time in her life, in the mall, with Riley, they have a great time together. But, it’s not just any festive music in the background: take on mefrom a-ah.

This song is related to The Last of Us Part II. In this second opus, Ellie travels through post-apocalyptic lands with Dina. During their wanderings, they come across a music store. If you take a few minutes to explore, you will be able to enter a room where there is a guitar.

That’s when Ellie — played by Ashley Johnson — will start scratching and singing an acoustic cover of take on meDina at her side, during a poetic and romantic moment out of time between the two young women, in love.

The wink is endearing. This song, associated with his love affair with Dina, is played during this moment of sharing with Riley — his first love.

Besides, this is not the only nod to the game.

I Got You Babe, Etta James

At the end of the episode, Ellie and Riley share another happy moment, in the Halloween costume shop. Removing their masks, they end up kissing. In the series, we then hear I Got You Babe by Etta James. It’s the same music as in Left Behind, the DLC of The Last of Us where we are witnessing this moment.
