Warning, spoilers. It is advisable to have seen episode 9 of The Last of Us before continuing to read this article.

The first season of The Last of Us ended with its ninth and final episode, titled “Look for the Light”, available on Prime Video. This final chapter marked the end of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey)’s journey through a United States ravaged by an epidemic caused by the fungus Cordyceps.

Presented as the potential key to a vaccine against this epidemic due to her immunity, Ellie was to be taken to the Fireflies’ lair in Salt Lake City by Joel. What he succeeds in doing in the last episode of the series.

Even if the events turn to the drama at the end when he understands that Ellie will have to die so that the Fireflies can try to create a vaccine.

Unable to bring himself to lose the one he now considers his daughter, Joel kills the Fireflies, the surgeon in charge of the operation and even Marlene (Merle Dandridge), one of the leaders of the Fireflies who had entrusted him with this dangerous mission.

This tragic episode, which adapts one of the last controversial sequences of the video game, is rich in emotions. But you may have missed a touching detail in this chapter, especially if you are not familiar with the video game work.

Three video game actresses are present in the final episode of The Last of Us!

In the grueling scene in the operating room, one of the nurses is played by an actress well known to video game fans. This is Laura Bailey, the original interpreter, voice and incarnation via performance capture, of Abby, one of the main heroines of the second opus. The Last of Us: Part II, which will be adapted in future seasons of the series.

For the anecdote, Laura Bailey had already played a character in the first part of the video game work, The Last of Us: Part I, namely one of the two nurses in this famous sequence!

The actress therefore resumes her first role in the universe of The Last of Us. But if this appearance is so touching, it is because it has a particular meaning for the sequel to The Last of Us, which fans know GOOD.

[ATTENTION SPOILERS – Le paragraphe suivant révèle des éléments d’intrigue du jeu The Last of Us : Part II. Si vous ne voulez rien savoir, ne lisez pas ce qui suit.] The character of Abby, who is introduced in the second game and who is embodied by Laura Bailey, is none other than the daughter of the famous surgeon who was to operate on Ellie and whom Joel killed. The consequences of Joel’s actions will be terrible since Abby will take revenge on Joel in the second installment of The Last of Us. [FIN SPOILERS]

The presence of Laura Bailey in this specific scene is therefore a moving nod to the second video game and following the tragic events that Joel and Ellie will go through since Abby will have an important role in the next episodes of the series.

But Laura Bailey is not the only actress of the video games to be present in this last episode of The Last of Us. This last chapter contains a flashback of Anna, the mother of Ellie, who gives her life after the attack from an infected.

She is then seen asking Marlene to kill her since she was bitten while giving birth. This passage also helps to understand the origin of Ellie’s immunity. And the character of Anna is embodied by Ashley Johnson, the interpreter and the original voice of Ellie in the video game work!

Finally, this last episode of The Last of Us therefore marks the return of Merle Dandridge, who plays Marlene, the leader of the Fireflies. At a press conference reported by ReverseNeil Druckmann, creator of the games and co-showrunner of the series, underlines the importance of these appearances:

“People say that Merle is the only actress who played the same role in both the game and the series, which is not entirely true because Laura Bailey also played the nurse in the room operation in the first game, and now she’s playing that nurse again.”

Barely recognizable as a nurse, will Laura Bailey be able to play another role in the sequel to The Last of Us? Neil Druckmann is not closed to this idea: “Maybe we will do something else with her next season”. Same story for the other co-showrunner Craig Mazin: “She has a mask. So we can play her whatever we want next season”.

The Last of Us series is available in full on Prime Video.
