In Episode 6 of “The Last of Us”, Joel and Ellie’s journey took them to Joel’s brother Tommy and a thriving settlement. This shows the two the way to the Fireflies, which are said to be in the University of Eastern Colorado. When they get there, they find only the remains of a hasty evacuation. And a new danger.

As they leave the university labs, they are ambushed by a group of armed men. Although Joel manages to fight off one of them, he himself is badly injured. Ellie has to take him to safety on horseback, but his condition continues to deteriorate. However, the bandits could soon be out looking for them, as they are the most fearsome type of enemy we’ve seen in The Last of Us so far: cannibals.

These are the attackers who ambushed Joel and Ellie

So far nothing is officially known about the attackers from the 6th episode of “The Last of Us”. Since the HBO series has so far followed the video game template very strictly, it can be deduced with some certainty that it is a group of cannibals. Around their territory, they prey on lone travelers and other survivors, kidnapping them by force or lies, killing them, and then eating them.

Exactly how and when they decided to become monsters worse than infected is not known, but it shows once again that there is something even worse and more dangerous in the world of “The Last of Us”. than the cordyceps fungus and the mutants.

It is also not known from the video game how many other cannibal groups there are on the territory of the former USA. Eating other humans is certainly forbidden in FEDRA-controlled quarantine zones, but elsewhere some humans seem willing to do anything to survive, even giving up their human selves to do so.

The leader of the cannibals is one of the most important characters in “The Last of Us”

In the 2013 Naughty Dog game, Ellie saves Joel, but he is near death. To care for him, Ellie goes hunting and meets David, who offers her help and medicine. David is the leader of a group whose members, whether out of necessity or malice, became cannibals in order to survive after the outbreak. David lures Ellie to his town to recruit and convince her of his intentions and means. When she refuses, however, David attacks her in a rage and wants to eat her with the rest of his group.

Meanwhile, Joel is injured in a cabin in the woods, but he still manages to get up and catch up with Ellie to save her. However, when he finds her in the snowstorm, she has already killed David herself and is severely traumatized by what she has experienced. Ellie breaks down in tears in Joel’s arms, who tries to calm her down and sees her as his adopted daughter for the first time.

This moment between the two of them, when they finally open up emotionally in the face of deepest fear, grief, exhaustion and need, find each other and see them as family, is an enormously important and central point in the first season of the series. The brutal cannibal group and their leader David paved the way for this.

In addition to its importance for the relationship between Joel and Ellie, the cannibal community also shows how people do everything they can to survive in difficult times and how dark and brutalized parts of society have really become in “The Last of Us”.
