“The last round” – Funeral service for theater giant Peter Simonischek

The castle and its tradition
In 1922 it was Burgtheater director Hugo Thimig, who was one of the first to say goodbye with this funeral service. The intention is that the deceased honorary member of the theater will be laid out on the festive staircase of the house and family, friends and colleagues will be able to say goodbye.

The deceased is then driven once around the castle in the hearse, it is the so-called “last lap”.

Most recently it was acting giant Gert Voss, adopted in this way in 2014. The farewell of in 1996 caused a stir in Viennese society Joseph Meinrad. Because according to tradition, Federal President Thomas Klestil and Federal Chancellor Franz Vranitzky were said to have argued about who was allowed to recite the obituary.

On Paula Wessely, Christiane Hörbiger’s mother, Maresa Hörbiger and Elisabeth Orth, must have had a deterrent effect. She even had her will decree that she didn’t want a “last lap”.
