This Tuesday, August 22, 2023, Microsoft released two new updates for Windows 11 and 10. Unfortunately, and as many users attest, these patches cause blue screens of death.
Decidedly, the latest Windows cumulative updates cause quite a few problems among users. At the beginning of August, the security update released by Microsoft broke the essential functions of certain PCs. For some, File Explorer was inaccessible, while for others, Microsoft Defender was down.
This Tuesday, August 22, 2023, Microsoft released two cumulative updates for Windows 11 and 10 respectively addressing the code names KB5029351 and KB5029331. Originally, these two patches were to focus primarily on improving the Search function of both OSes and introducing a new Backup application.
Hop, a wild blue screen appears!
Only, after their deployment, many disgruntled comments from users began to flourish on Reddit, social networks and Microsoft forums. Indeed, these updates have triggered blue screens of death which would be caused in particular by problems “with an incompatible processor”.
Affected users were able to console themselves because both OS were able to uninstall faulty updates after the appearance of a first blue screen. According to the Redmond firm, this rather disabling bug would mainly affect users who own an MSI motherboard.
Beware if you have an MSI motherboard
Indeed, we notice a point in common on all the incident reports published here and there: all affected users are equipped with a brand chip, ranging from the Z690 to the later Z790. For the moment, the origin of the malfunction has not been clearly identified, but we imagine that it could be a compatibility problem with the latest BIOS released by the manufacturer a short time ago.
This theory has been verified by users, who have seen the pure and simple disappearance of the bug after downgraded to an older version of MSI’s BIOS. Anyway and if you encounter this problem, Microsoft invites you to leave a report on the Feedback Hub. Of course, we strongly advise you not to install these two updates (still currently available on Windows Update) if you have an MSI motherboard. At least not until Microsoft fixed the problem.
