The League of Legends MMO loses its brains

The future MMORPG based on the League of Legends universe is experiencing some temporary turbulence. The executive producer, who was the project’s conductor, has just left.

This is news that will certainly concern players who are eagerly awaiting the MMORPG from Riot Games, the studio behind League of Legends (LoL). On March 7, 2023, one of the project’s executives — Greg Street — announced his departure from the company for personal reasons, which he elaborates on in a series of posts on Twitter.

Riot Games challenges Blizzard and WoW with its own MMORPG

This is a significant loss for Riot Games, since the studio had entrusted the reins of the project to him. He found himself in the position of executive producer, which led him to be the conductor, the thinking head of the future title of the American company. But, promises Greg Street, this MMO is ” in good hands ». It is not yet known who will replace Greg Street.

Riot Games’ ambitions in MMORPGs – an acronym meaning “massively multiplayer online role-playing games” – have been assumed since the end of 2020. Moreover, it was Greg Street who, at the time, had formalized the plans of the studio, first in an evasive way (by slipping the word “massive”), then directly putting your feet in the dish (“It’s an MMO”).

On the official Riot Games website, a page dedicated to this future game is available, but the subject remains general. We know that it will be an MMORPG (i.e. at the World of Warcraft or at the Final Fantasy XIV Online). We also know that it will happen in the world of League of Legends. Rumors say that the game would be called World of Runeterrathe name of the world of LoL.

Greg Street, for his part, indicates that he will continue to evolve in the video game industry, without much more precision. In the world of MMOs, he is a well-known figure: in the past, he worked for Blizzard on wow precisely, as lead systems designer. Nicknamed Ghostcrawler, he joined Riot Games in 2014 as lead game designernine years earlier.

Riot Games has been working on its MMO project for years. This is not the only mysterious project on which the studio is working. Previously, there was project A, which resulted in Valorant, a first-person shooter (FPS) where you compete in two teams of five. It has met with some success since its launch in mid-2020.

Other projects are also underway. It’s about an L project, around a fighting game, still in the world of League of Legends (world that gave rise to the excellent series Arcane, whose season 2 is expected by the end of the year). There is also talk of an F project, which should result in a role-playing, action and hack’n’slash type video game. He too must be linked to the universe of LoL.
