The left-wing ministers, appointed to counter the NUPES?

The new government will meet this Monday for the first time in the Council of Ministers. With the arrival of a new figure from the left, Emmanuel Macron has carried out a small rebalancing vis-à-vis his first five-year term in order to prepare the legislative elections against the New Popular Ecological and Social Union (NUPES).

It’s almost half, 12 of the 26 new ministers appointed to the new government this Friday come from the left. With the appointment of Elisabeth Borne, the President of the Republic wants to reassure his left wing, neglected during the first five-year term. It is a strong double signal, because the president is also addressing the female and feminist electorate, who have been waiting for 31 years for a woman in Matignon. Responsible for environmental planning, the Prime Minister must seduce this left-wing electorate, tempted by the New People’s Ecological and Social Union (NUPES).

Like the new Minister of National Education, Pap Ndiaye is also on a mission in these legislative elections. His appointment is the only one widely hailed by the entire left, up to Jean-Luc Mélenchon. This decolonial researcher and historian specializing in minorities is the symbol of this break with the former “anti-woke” minister Jean-Michel Blanquer.

Emmanuel Macron rakes on the left

Finally, to convince the last reluctant on this change of direction, the president applied himself to giving the social ministries to ministers of the left like Health for Brigitte Bourguignon or Culture for Rima Abdul-Malak. In short, Emmanuel Macron’s intention is clear: to expand to the left, to cut the grass under the feet of the leader of La France Insoumise, Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
