In Europe, the Lightning connector should soon enter the history books… to stay there. The European Parliament has agreed to make the USB-C standard the only connection authorized in the future on European electronic devices.

It won’t happen immediately, but Apple will have to get rid of its Lightning connector, at least in Europe. Attached to the European Parliament, the Committee for the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) this week took a further step in favor of the adoption of USB-C as the only connection on certain electronic devices within the EU.

The end of the Lightning port? A matter of time…

The idea? Allow consumers to use a single charger for most of their small devices (smartphones, headphones, tablets, etc. with the exception of smartwatches), but also to reduce electronic waste generated by the proliferation of standards and connectors.

The IMCO decision, which will now be the subject of negotiations with the various Member States of the European Union, also plans to require brands to add more complete information to the packaging of their products to indicate , for example, to the consumer whether or not a charging cable is included. Finally, we learn that the EU also wants the adoption of a new standard for wireless charging of the various devices mentioned above. Here again, the practical and ecological arguments are put forward.

Note that it is quite possible that Apple simply removes the Lightning connector from its iPhones… without replacing it with USB-C. Rumors have been evoking for years the launch of an iPhone without any wired connection. The introduction of MagSafe “wireless” charging on the iPhone 12 and the rumor of a future MagSafe connector capable of transferring data also seem to go in this direction.
