The London Stock Exchange opened slightly higher on Wednesday, driven in particular by the pharmaceutical giant GSK and the mining group Anglo-American which is still benefiting from expectations of a bidding war after BHP’s takeover offer.

The main index of the London Stock Exchange, the FTSE 100, gained 0.19% to 8,159.74 pence around 07:45 GMT.

Most European stock markets are closed on Wednesday due to the May Day holiday, as well as some Asian markets.

“The FTSE-100 index got rid of the nervousness and was moving slightly higher at the start of trading,” commented Susannah Streeter, analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, who attributes it in particular to “the positivity at the start of month, after a record month of April.

The FTSE-100 broke its all-time high in April and remained close to its peaks.

It notably reached a new high on Monday at more than 8,189 points.
