The long-awaited remake of the best Star Wars RPG is still alive

In total obscurity since its announcement in 2021, the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) is still in development. It is headed by Saber Interactive.

In 2021, fans of Star Wars were vibrating upon discovering the trailer for an ambitious remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR for short), destined for the PlayStation 5 catalog. Since then, there has been uncertainty and we have heard everything and its opposite about this project that has passed through several hands. The fragile situation of the publisher Embracer Group, which recently sold the studio in charge of development (Saber Interactive), was not a good signal.

Precisely, Saber Interactive wanted to take stock of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Yes, it is still in production, according to recent comments from Matthew Karch reported by IGN on April 3. The CEO wanted to reassure the players: “ It is clear and obvious that we are working on this game. The press has spoken about it on numerous occasions. What I can say is that gaming is alive and well and we are determined to exceed consumer expectations. »

Should we be reassured for the KOTOR remake?

The separation between Embracer Group and Saber Interactive does not appear to have had any negative impact on the situation of Knights of the Old Republic and he was the first to leave with the project. When the divorce was finalized in March 2024, the two companies made it clear that it was for a better future. “ We have found a win-win solution for Embracer and the part of Saber that we are divesting. The move puts both companies in a much stronger position to scale », indicated Lars Wingefors, the boss of Embracer. The two actors will remain partners.

Beyond these behind-the-scenes negotiations and despite the enthusiastic declarations of Matthew Karch, the status of the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic still remains quite uncertain. We’re talking about a major game about which we haven’t seen much, if anything, since 2021. We’re also talking about a game that has experienced tumultuous development, which was first entrusted to Aspyr Media. In 2022, the media Bloomberg reported major production concerns, with layoffs as a result. It is for these reasons that Saber Interactive has come to the rescue.

By being optimistic, we can say to ourselves that Knights of the Old Republic is now away from problems and that developers will be able to work with much more peace of mind. In any case, we will have to be patient before discovering more about this remake. It initially aimed for a launch in 2022 and, given the current situation, we do not expect it before 2026. We hope that Saber Interactive will have more peace of mind. KOTORconsidered one if not the best Star Wars video game, deserves a remake that lives up to its reputation.
