The Lord of the Rings: After “The Hobbit” – what happened to Thorin’s dwarves?

• In “The Hobbit,” Bilbo Baggins left the Shire with 13 dwarves and Gandalf.
• We know what happened to Gandalf and Bilbo and the fate of some dwarves was decided on the big screen.
• But what happened to the remaining dwarves?

Hobbits don’t like traveling alone – they wouldn’t even think of it and it takes a lot of convincing to get them out of the Shire. Frodo began his journey in “The Lord of the Rings” with Sam, Merry and Pippin and in Rivendell the Fellowship of the Ring was formed. In Bilbo’s case, it all started with 13 dwarves – and Gandalf, who usually has a hand in things when the quiet life in Bag End suddenly ends.

We have already clarified how the story of the companions continued after the defeat of Sauron, but what became of the dwarves at Thorin’s side?

Thorin Oakenshield

Thorin is probably the most important dwarf in “The Hobbit”, his actions and mistakes determine the course of the story. The heir to the kingdom in Mount Erebor dies in the Battle of the Five Armies, but is on good terms with Bilbo beforehand.

Fili and Kili

After Thorin, the throne of Erebor would actually have gone to Fíli or Kíli, Thorin’s nephew. But just like their uncle, the two brothers also died in the Battle of the Five Armies. They share this fate in the book and the film, although Peter Jackson’s film adaptation took some liberties here. So Kíli’s role was significantly increased and a love triangle was added between him, Tauriel and Legolas. Ultimately, Kíli sacrificed himself to save Tauriel.

Bomber

Bombur is the fattest of the dwarves and loves food and peace – just like a hobbit actually. However, when it comes down to it, Bombur is a good fighter and naturally loyal to his fellow dwarves. In the “Lord of the Rings” novels, Frodo learns from Glóin that Bombur stayed in Erebor and became so fat that several dwarves had to help him get up. So he had a good time until the end of his life.

Balin

After the Battle of the Five Armies, Balin initially lived in Erebor, but later he set out with some other dwarves and recaptured the mines of Moria. He ruled there for five years until the orcs attacked and Balin died. The Fellowship finds him in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

Dwalin

Dwalin did not accompany his brother Balin to Moria. Instead, he remained in Erebor and lived there until his death at the age of 340. No other dwarf in Thorin’s party lived to such an old age.

Dori and Nori

The brothers Dori and Nori also stay in Erebor after the Shaft of the Five Armies and probably lived a good life there. However, it is unknown how old they lived and whether they had any further adventures towards the end of the Third Age.

Ori

Ori joined Balin when he left for Moria. He recorded all the events in the Book of Mazarbul. The companions find the book and the dead Ori in “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring”, his last notes report the attack of the orcs.

Oin

The hard of hearing Óin also dies in Moria, but not at the hands of orcs. Instead, Óin met his end when the “Watcher in the Water” dragged him to his death. The terrible creature also attacked the Fellowship of the Ring in “The Lord of the Rings.”

Bifur

You might not think it from Bifur, the dwarf with an ax in his head, but he is a passionate toymaker. After the Battle of the Five Armies, he stayed in Erebor and was able to live out his passion until the end of his life.

Bofur

Even though Bofur oversleeps in Lake City and is suddenly left alone, he is actually a very reliable dwarf in Thorin’s entourage. He also did not join Balin, but remained in Erebor, and many years later Glóin confirmed that Bofur was still alive.

Gloin

Glóin is the father of Gimli. After the Battle of the Five Armies he lives with his son in Erebor, but together they set off for Rivendell and there Gimli joins the community of the ring. In year 15 of the Fourth Age he died.
