Actor Elijah Wood has concerns about the new movies from the “Lord of the Rings” universe.

US actor Elijah Wood (42) has expressed his concerns about the planned new “Lord of the Rings” films. He supports the idea in general, but also has concerns he revealed to “GQ”. He was “fascinated and excited” and hoped it would be good, he said.

It was clear that there would be more films. Still, Wood said he was “surprised” when he heard about it. “Obviously there is a desire to make a lot of money behind it.” This “commercial” does not necessarily have to be something bad, according to the actor. “Great art can come from commerce. So these two things are not mutually exclusive.”

Wood: Passion for the books crucial

But the enormously successful “Lord of the Rings” films were not created because of the money, emphasized the “Yellowjackets” actor, who had embodied the hobbit Frodo Baggins in the original trilogy. “They came out of a passion for these books and a desire to make them happen. And I hope that ultimately will be the driving force behind the films that follow,” said the mime. Any responsible screenwriter or filmmaker needs the “reverence for Tolkien’s material and the enthusiasm to explore it”.

Comeback as Frodo Baggins?

In a recent interview with Extra, Wood was open to returning to the Lord of the Rings franchise. When asked if he would be willing to reprise his role as Frodo Baggins in a reboot, he said, “I don’t know, but if there are more films that Frodo could be a part of, I’d be in.” Wood last had a cameo role as Frodo in 2012’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

The original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy (2001-2003) still has legendary status today. The three films grossed a total of $2.9 billion at the box office worldwide and won a total of 17 Oscars. In February, the Warner Bros. film studio and its subsidiary New Line Cinema announced new “Lord of the Rings” movies. In April 2024, for example, the anime prequel “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” will be released in cinemas.
