The Lord of the Rings: Find out how fast the Nazgul flying animals fly!

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER

In “The Lord of the Rings,” Sauron’s servants, the Nazgul, ride so-called furry beasts that are capable of high flying speeds. But how high?

  • The Nazgul are among Sauron’s most dangerous servants and use furry beasts as a means of transportation.
  • With their flying animals, the Nazgul can cover long distances in a short time, as the furry beasts fly extremely quickly.
  • With a wingspan of almost 12 meters, the Nazgul flying animals reach considerable speeds. We reveal how fast they actually fly!

In The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Nazgul, led by the Witch-King of Angmar, ride winged creatures called furry beasts. Not only are these mounts characterized by their incredible speed, but they are also extremely dangerous and effective in combat, as seen in the Battle of Mount Pelennor in The Return of the King.

The Witch King flies over the extensive battlefield and kills King Théoden of Rohan (Bernard Hill) with the help of his furry beast. At the end of “The Two Towers” he also attacks the city of Osgiliath on his fur beast in order to spread fear and terror there. But how fast can the Nazgul’s mounts actually fly?

From Mordor to Isengard in 6 hours: That’s how fast the Nazgul fly

In the book “Useless Knowledge for Tolkien Fans: The Most Exciting, Absurd and Fun Facts About Middle-earth” by Stefan Servos it is stated that the Nazgul’s mounts move at a speed of 130 km/h fly.

Smaug flies faster

Dragon Smaug from “The Hobbit” flies a whole lot faster than the furry beasts. The dragon reaches around 200 km/h (via The National News).

If Sauron were to send his Nazgul from his fortress Barad-dur to Saruman in Isengard, the Witch-King would need around 6 hours on his furry beast. The distance between the two towers Barad-dur and Orthanc is approximately 860 kilometers. (If you want to know how far Mordor is from the Shire, click here!)

The 130 km/h is the average speed of the furry beasts. It is not known what the maximum speed is. A furry beast can probably reach speeds of up to 200 km/h over short distances, depending on the weather.

What is the wingspan of furry beasts?

The furry beasts have a wingspan of approximately 9 to 12 meters. In comparison, dragon Smaug has a wingspan of 110 meters in “The Hobbit” films. Smaug has a total length of 130 meters, which is significantly shorter in the book. It’s only 18 meters. The wingspan in the book is not known (via Dimensions).

It should be noted that the furry beasts are not dragons. Dragons were created by Morgoth in the First Age to subjugate Middle-earth. Morgoth used her to lead his forces because of her strength and intelligence. How furry beasts were created is unknown. There is nothing to suggest that Sauron created them.

Horses vs. furry beasts

In the first “Lord of the Rings” film, the Nazgul still ride horses. This actually makes little sense, as the furry beasts are superior to horses in many ways. The reason is that horses are less conspicuous. So if Sauron doesn’t want his Nazgul to be in the spotlight too much, he lets them ride horses.
