Can Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power jump on the dragon bandwagon and stand up to Disney+’s House of the Dragon and Eragon? There have been no dragons in previous trailers for The Lord of the Rings series and fans are wondering if Smaug from The Hobbit is alive at the time of The Rings of Power?

Nothing is known about Smaug’s birthday, but we can say with a high degree of probability that Smaug is already alive at the time of the Amazon Prime Video series. The series is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” in the Third Age.

According to JRR Tolkien, the dragons were brought to life in the First Age by Melkor, also known as Morhoth. How Melkor accomplishes this is never described. Since Tolkien repeatedly states that evil cannot create life, Melkor must have made other living beings into dragons.

Many dragons die in the battle of Melkor against the Elves in the First Age, but some survive and hide on the mainland of Middle-earth, including Smaug. The dragon is one of the winged fire dragons used by Melkor for the first and last time in the War of Wrath.

Since we’ve already seen scenes showing the Wrath War, there’s a good chance we’ll see dragons as well. It is unclear whether Smaug will also be there. Tolkien himself never mentioned Smaug being involved in the battle, however it would only be logical.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 1 starts on September 2, 2022 in the Amazon Prime Video New Releases program. Even before the start of the series, it was already confirmed that Season 2 of “The Lord of the Rings” series will come.
