  • New images for Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings” series have been released and show the island of Númenor.
  • In a way, the island is the forerunner of Gondor, for after the island’s destruction, Isildur travels to the mainland and founds Gondor.
  • Finally we can get our first look at Isildur in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

The start of the fantasy series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is getting closer and closer. On September 2, 2022 the time has finally come and logically Amazon Prime Video is gradually beating the advertising drum properly. Now a whole batch of new images have been released, showing us the island of Númenor in all its glory.

The series is a prequel to Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films and the Isle of Númenor is a kingdom that existed thousands of years before Frodo’s adventures. It is a highly developed society full of wealth and prosperity. But dark days are coming for Isildur (Maxim Baldry) and the other Númenóreans…

Because of Sauron’s intrigues and the greed of the people, the island will soon be destroyed. But until that happens, the Amazon series still has some exciting stories to tell.

In “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” you can see Baldry’s Isildur as well as Lloyd Owen as his father Elendil. Besides Isildur, Elendil has a second son, Anárion, who will not play a major role at the beginning of the series. For this, the series establishes another child: Isildur’s sister Eärien (Ema Horvath), who does not exist in Tolkien’s template.

The Queen Regent of Númenor is Miriel, portrayed by Cynthia Addai-Robinson. She is supported by Pharazon (Trystan Gravelle), who should already be known to book fans. In the books, Ar-Pharazon is the last king of Númenor, who is to some extent responsible for the island’s downfall.

To what extent the “Lord of the Rings” series will ultimately deviate from Tolkien’s template remains to be seen. However, showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay emphasize how important it is to them to capture Tolkien’s spirit and stay close to the book in that sense.

We remain curious and look forward to September 2, 2022, when Season 1 of the “Lord of the Rings” series will start streaming in the Amazon Prime Video news program and take us back to Middle-earth.
