“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”: Does the new trailer show nemesis Sauron?

The trailer features some new, as-yet-unknown characters as well as characters we already know from the original The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Also present: elves, humans, dwarves and orcs. In addition, a well-known name is mentioned for the first time: Sauron. Since the action in “The Rings of Power” is located in the second age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before the events in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy, well-known characters such as the powerful Elven Queen Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) or Elrond (Robert Aramayo) are still clear younger. There is also a lot of speculation about the appearance of a mysterious and apparently evil character: a handsome-faced young man, played by actor Anson Boon (1917, The Winter Lake). In all likelihood, this is the former figure of the arch-enemy Sauron, who at that time was still up to mischief under the name Annator and, as a hateful shapeshifter with intrigues and deceit, was responsible for the downfall of the legendary kingdom of NĂºmenor. Sauron/Annator’s rise and the fight of the elves, men and dwarves against him will probably shape the plot of “The Rings of Power” significantly. This is also shown in a scene from the trailer in which the Elven Queen Galadriel looks into a so-called “Palantir”, a seeing stone, and sees war and destruction there. She seems to sense that the prevailing peace in Middle-earth will soon end and says: “Evil does not sleep – it just waits.”
