In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power we see something extraordinary with Elrond and Durin IV: a friendship between Elves and Dwarves. But this is tested when Elrond finds himself in a moral dilemma.

A rare friendship across races: Elrond and Durin

There is a long and complicated relationship between the races of elves and dwarves. Both helped each other in times of need, but also waged bitter feuds against each other. In “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” the distrust and sometimes open enmity between them was a constant motive, which was overcome with Legolas and Gimli.

In “The Rings of Power” we see from Elrond and Durin IV that a long-lasting friendship between the two races was possible as early as the Second Age.

Even if Elrond, Durin IV is not on good terms at first due to the long absence of Elrond, the two quickly fraternize again. Elrond is the one who makes possible the alliance between the elves of Eregion under Celebrimbor and the dwarves of Khazad-dum under Durin’s father Durin III.

The result of this is the combined work of elven and dwarven crafters and builders on the Great Forge of Eregion. It is later to be of enormous importance. This period is also described in Tolkien’s books as the most harmonious and prosperous between the Elves and Dwarves. But how long can things go well? Finally, in the Third Age, we know that the two were open enemies at times.

A treasure as a test of friendship?

The rare find the dwarves are making in their mines in Khazad-dum is set to change everything. A rare, sparkling silver ore that is “lighter than a feather and stronger than dragon armor”, mithril is introduced in The Rings of Power.

As we will see in episode 4, dismantling it is extremely dangerous. When Elrond discovers the Ancient Mine with the veins of mythri, he has to swear to his friend Durin to keep the secret and not to tell anyone about it.

However, we know from the lore of Tolkien about the Second Age that at some point elves would also get hold of mithril and work with it and create incredible crafts.

Does Elrond break friendship with Durin to help his own people?

After Gil-Galad tells Elrond in episode 5 of “The Rings of Power” of the impending demise of the elves, the son of Earendil has to make a difficult decision. Will he betray Durin and reveal the secret of the magical ore Mithril, thus sustaining hope for the continued existence of the Elves and Middle-earth? Or will he stay true to his friend and the oath he swore, but watch as his people slowly perish.

Wise and diplomatic as Elrond is, he finds the optimal solution and seeks dialogue with Durin. Elrond reveals that he came to Khazad-dum unknowingly, but on behalf of Gil-Galad and Celebrimbor to get the mithril the dwarves found.

According to an old Elven legend, a Silmaril Stone believed lost became Mithril when an Elven hero fought a Balrog. During their duel on the peaks of the Misty Mountains, lightning struck a tree between the two, spreading the precious stone’s power as veins of mithri throughout the mountain.

With the power of Mithril, which still seems to possess the splendor of the Silmaril, the Elves could restore their glory. According to Celebrimbor, one could flood each Elf again “with the light of the Valar” and thus save the Eldar as a race.

Elrond and Durin’s reconciliation

Now Elrond Durin must proclaim the magnitude of his people’s imminent dark demise. He is the only hope of the elves, who would otherwise have to leave Middle-earth within a year without the mithril, or “be carried away by time as a shadow”. The phrase, “The fate of the whole Elven people rests in your hands”, seems to have convinced Durin. He seems to enjoy being the Elves’ only hope and doesn’t blame Elrond for his past clandestine mission to Khazad-Dum.

The tension of the scene quickly dissolves and Elrond seems relieved and happy that his friend is apparently willing to help him. But Durin warns him not to thank him just yet, because first they have to tell his father, Durin III. convince them to share the valuable mithril. But the friendship between the two seems to have been saved and could soon lead to an even happier time between their two peoples.

Of course it would be fatal if Gil-Galad and Celebrimbor acted alone and started mining the ore before Elrond and King Durin III. can negotiate. That could destroy the good relationship that Elrond has built up again. We will surely learn more in the next episode of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”.
