In Episode 3 of The Lord of the Rings series The Rings of Power, Númenor is shown for the first time. Galadriel is rescued from the sea and taken to Númenor by Elendil, master of the guards. Elves have not been welcome on Númenor for centuries, and the arrival of Galadriel creates tension in the capital. The former friendship between the two peoples seems to have collapsed.

The island of Númenor is one of the main locations in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. It is the magnificent human realm that was superior in so many ways to Gondor and Rohan from The Lord of the Rings movies – read that right: was. We tell you everything you need to know about Númenor!

The Lord of the Rings: When, How and by Who Was Númenor Created?

The Lord of the Rings series is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth. This is heralded by defeating the evil Morgoth. At the end of the First Age there is a tremendous battle in which the Valar face and defeat Morgoth.

In gratitude to the Edain, humans who aided the Valar in their fight against the villain, the star-shaped island of Númenor was raised from the sea, between the continent of Middle-earth and the realm of the Valar, Valinor.

The Rings of Power: How are Númenóreans different from other humans?

It was not just the island that was bequeathed to the Edain. The people of the Isle of Númenor, the Númenóreans, were blessed with longevity. Some even lived up to 400 years. In addition, the Númenóreans are larger, stronger, and wiser than normal humans inhabiting the mainland of Middle-earth.

The latter is because Númenor was friendly with the Elves and not infrequently visited by them, allowing wisdom and knowledge to be exchanged. The Númenóreans are considered nobler and more exalted than the humans who did not join the Valar in the fight against Morgoth.

While the Third Age kingdom of Rohan (in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers) is more rural and less lavish, the capital of Gondor, Minas Tirith, gives a glimpse of what the lavishness of Númenor once was.

Architecturally and culturally, the people of Númenor were at their peak. The splendor and dignity of Númenor was second to none!

The Lord of the Rings: Númenor and the Important Events of History

Númenor prospered for the first 600 years. Subsequently, good connections were established with the Elves of Middle-earth and trade routes were promoted. Friendships were also made with the people of the mainland. Above all, friendship with the elves plays an important role in “The Rings of Power”.

When Sauron then forged anew with the forging of the Rings of Power and claimed the mainland of Middle-earth as his, Númenor intervened. Not out of kindness. The King of Númenor felt his authority undermined. Sauron was caught and taken to Númenor to languish in prison.

But people’s hearts are easily deceived. Sauron corrupted the Númenóreans from his cell and fomented their budding enmity against the Elves to his advantage. Eventually he got the king Ar-Pharazon to sail against Valinor.

The Rings of Power: This is how the Fall of Númenor comes about

When speaking of the fall of a kingdom it is often to be understood metaphorically, but this is not the case with Númenor. The island was actually sunk in the sea.

As already described, Sauron seduced the hearts of the Númenóreans and stirred their envy. Though blessed with longevity, they aspired to the immortality of the elves who eke out an immortal existence on Valinor. However, the Númenóreans were forbidden to set foot on Valinor.

Finally, Ar-Pharazon sailed against Valinor with a mighty fleet. The Valar who lived there appealed to the god of Tolkien’s world, Eru Ilúvatar, who sank the island and the entire fleet into the sea. Few Númenóreans, loyal to the Valar and the Elves, managed to survive and flee to the mainland.

Among the survivors of Númenor are Elendil and Isildur, who will star in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Isildur is Elendil’s son and has a brother, Anárion. The three found the kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor after the fall of Númenor.

Elendil becomes High King of both realms, but actively rules over Arnor while his sons rule over Gondor. While Arnor does not survive the Third Age, Gondor is destined to become one of the most important kingdoms.

The White Tree of Gondor is also a remnant of Númenor. Isildur was able to save a fruit from the White Tree Nimloth, which he planted in Minas Tirith. She eventually became the White Tree of Gondor.

In the series, the aforementioned Elendil (Lloyd Owen) and Isildur (Maxim Baldry) naturally play an important role. Another member of the family was created especially for the series: Eärien (Ema Horvath). She is Isildur’s sister. Anárion has been absent from trailers and images so far, but will likely be introduced later in the series.

Other important characters are of course the Queen Regent Míriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). She is the ruler of Númenor at the time of the series, but Pharazon (Trystan Gravelle) seeks her power and will be responsible for many intrigues in the series.

Away from the series, there is of course another important person related to Númenor: Aragorn! Aragorn is also blessed with long life, being of Númenórean descent. He is a direct descendant of Isildur, eventually making him the rightful king of Gondor.
