Apple presents its latest computer reserved for professionals, which finally switches to Apple Silicon processors… and takes the opportunity to inflate its price.
The Mac Pro was the very last computer to feature Intel-designed processors, as the rest of the lineup transitioned to Apple’s M1 and then M2 processors. After a few months behind schedule, the Mac Pro is finally back in a brand new M2 Ultra version.
An unchanged design, but updated connectivity
The Mac Pro was mocked by many users for its tower form factor, which was quickly compared to a cheese grater. Apple designers do not seem to have been offended beyond measure, and offer with the Mac Pro 2023 a device in all respects identical.
There are eight Thunderbolt 4 ports on the Mac Pro 2023, six on the back of the tower and two on the front, more accessible for plugging in accessories. The Mac Pro also includes three USB-A ports, two higher-bandwidth HDMI ports to support resolutions up to 8K and frame rates up to 240Hz, two 10Gb Ethernet ports, and finally a headphone jack.
Apple does not forget connectivity, and who says Mac Pro, says performance over the top. The new Apple computer thus includes a Wi-Fi 6E chip, as well as support for Bluetooth 5.3.
The most powerful Mac available
The Mac Pro 2023 includes the latest M2 Ultra SoC, also available in the Mac Studio 2023 unveiled alongside during WWDC 2023. The processor features 24 CPU cores and up to 76 GPU cores in the most advanced configurations. The latter also includes 192 GB with 800 GB / s of unified memory bandwidth. Apple also announces that the computer can play 22 ProRes 8K video streams simultaneously.
The Mac Pro incorporates seven PCIe expansion slots, including six open expansion slots supporting the fourth-generation standard.
The Mac Pro is a machine of superlatives, and that goes for its price too. The machine will be available from June 13 from 8,299 euros for the basic configuration. Pre-orders start now.
