Apple unveiled during the inaugural keynote of WWDC 2023 the new version of its desktop computer, which gains in performance thanks to the use of a variation of the M2 chip.

WWDC is usually the place for hardware announcements reserved primarily for professionals and this edition did not disappoint with the presentation, in addition to the 15-inch MacBook Air, of the latest Mac Studio.

A Mac Studio in the same format

As a reminder, the Mac Studio is a computer that could quickly be summed up as a thicker, steroid-boosted Mac mini, to meet the needs of creatives and freelancers. The computer is offered without a screen, except to invest in one of the Studio Display monitors available on Apple’s online store, or to use its own external screen.

The Mac Studio 2023 does not reinvent the wheel, and is satisfied to be only a technical update. The format is strictly the same with a thickness of 9.5 mm, and a design still entirely made of aluminum.

Regarding connectivity, Apple has seen things big with the presence of four Thunderbolt ports, a 10 Gigabit Ethernet port, two USB-A ports, an HDMI port and finally a jack connection.

Double the performance compared to the previous generation

The notable improvement of this new version is the arrival of the M2 chip. Or should we say the M2 chips since, for the occasion, Apple offers both a version equipped with the SoC M2 Max and another integrating the M2 Ultra.

Apple promises us 50% improvement with the M2 Max chip compared to the M1 Max, and performance four times higher than the 27-inch iMac integrating an Intel chip. The processor includes 12 CPU cores and up to 38 GPU cores. For comparison, Apple says After Effects users will see up to 50% improvement over the previous version.

The M2 Ultra offers double the performance compared to the M2 Max, with 50% more unified memory and a maximum configuration integrating 192 GB of RAM, with 800 GB/s for the most demanding professionals. The M2 Ultra chip includes 24 CPU cores and up to 76 GPU cores.

Mac Studio also includes a Wi-Fi 6E chip, the latest version of the wireless standard, to give you the fastest possible speeds.

The Mac Studio will be available at a price of €2,399 from June 13, and pre-orders are open now.
