The Malian junta announces the withdrawal of Mali from the G5 Sahel

BAMAKO, May 15 (Reuters) – The Malian army announced on Sunday the country’s withdrawal from the G5 Sahel, a military alliance of five West African countries formed in 2017 to fight against jihadist groups that have since led several years of deadly attacks in the region.

To justify its decision, the junta highlighted the little progress made against the insurgents and the failure in the recent organization of summits in Mali.

This decision, announced by press release, further isolates Mali from its neighbors, while the country is targeted by sanctions from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) following the military coup of 2020 (Fadimata Kontao report; French version Jean Terzian)
