The Mandalorian Summons A Mythical Star Wars Creature In Episode 2

A spectacular creature is seen at the very end of the second episode of The Mandalorian. She occupies an important place in the mythology of Mandalore.

The scene lasts only a handful of seconds, at the very end of episode 2 of season 3 of The Mandalorian, broadcast on March 8, 2023 on Disney+. It will be banal for those who do not know the Star Wars saga inside out. But, for the fan who has revised his classics, it is impossible not to grasp the nature of the monster that appears at the very last moment. It promises to be crucial for the rest of the plot of this season of The Mandalorian.

Obviously, no question of continuing the article without the traditional warning: the sequel reveals elements of the plot.

A mythical creature in Mandalore culture

Let’s not beat around the bush any further: the monster that appears at the end of the episode is a mythosaur. It is a huge creature, which resides on Mandalore, and whose appearance evokes a kind of dragon without wings. Key characteristic of a mythosaur: two tusks leave on each side of its mouth, at the level of the jowls, to transplant forwards.

In episode 2, we unfortunately do not have the chance to admire the beast in its entirety. For the staging, it was chosen to show only small portions, thanks to the lamps appearing on the helmet of Bo-Katan Kryze, who came to the rescue of Din Djarin. Difficult to see anything: we are in troubled waters, far below the surface and in the dark.

Despite everything, we understand that we are not at all dealing with a small critter. As they return to the surface, Bo-Katan Kryze misses the header; there’s no doubt that the Mandalorian could get herself crunched in one bite. Fortunately, the monster does not show any hostile reaction. On the contrary, it seems to sink into the depths of the planet.

How to subscribe to Disney+ to see Star Wars

Disney+ is available in France:

This scene is interesting for two reasons: first, it confirms that the species has not disappeared. It was said to have been extinct for ages, but it is clear that specimens are still alive (in any case, at least one). Perhaps the mythosaurs have taken advantage of the planet’s abandonment since the devastation of the surface in an ancient war to regenerate.

In ancient times, these mythosaurs could be used as mounts – it is said that Mandalore the Great rode one of these beasts, especially during the war between the Jedi knights and the Mandalorian warriors. It was during this conflict that a cataclysm befell this world, located on the outskirts of the galaxy.

The other notable point is the influence the species has had on Mandalorian culture. The skull of the mythosaur has become a tribal symbol of this people. It is found painted on the armor of certain warriors or assembled in the form of a small pendant, embroidered on pennants or standards, or opposed on the walls of a building or the cabin of a ship.
