The Mariazellerbahn – Through the Dirndltal into Mariazellerland

From the Lower Austrian state capital of St. Pölten it goes through the picturesque Dirndltal, the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park and the Mariazellerland to the Styrian pilgrimage site of Mariazell, over 19 viaducts and through 21 tunnels: The Mariazellerbahn is open to its guests all year round. Since May 1st, the tourist offerings – the Ötscherbär family adventure train, the exclusive panoramic carriages and the nostalgic steam train – have been back on the rails.

The journey on Austria’s longest narrow-gauge railway is particularly impressive at any time of the year. Along the 84 kilometer long, traditional route of the Mariazellerbahn, in addition to the modern sky stair sets, the exclusive panorama cars, the Ötscherbär family adventure train and the nostalgic steam train also run. In the summer months, the observation car travels along and offers pure convertible feeling – including wind and unrestricted views of the wonderful landscape. On the Saturdays in July and August, the Ötscherbär is transformed into a summer holiday adventure train – an exciting one awaits the children on the return journey Animation program. Excursion tip: On June 1st, children’s songwriter Bernhard Fibich travels on the Ötscherbär adventure train and gives a concert. A night full of experiences and natural spectacles awaits passengers on August 9th, when the Ötscherbär sets off on a shooting star ride. The nostalgic steam train on the Mariazellerbahn offers a train ride like yesteryear. The impressive steam locomotive Mh.6 started its loyal service in 1908 and today offers a first-class railway experience. The nostalgic steam train runs on selected Sundays during the season. With the Mariazellerbahn you can travel comfortably and climate-friendly to the most beautiful excursion destinations in the picturesque Pielachtal, in the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park and in Mariazellerland.
