The hamlet of Haut-Vernet has been cordoned off since the beginning of the search for little Emile, 2 and a half years old, by decision of the mayor of the town. He announced on Tuesday the renewal of this measure to protect the family.
For more than three weeks, the usually calm village of Vernet has seen its daily life drastically change. The hamlet of just 125 souls now lives to the rhythm of gendarmerie teams, drones and journalists who have come to cover a particularly worrying affair. On July 8, little Emile, 2 and a half years old, disappeared near the house of his grandparents, inhabitants of a house located in the upper part of the village, Haut-Vernet. He was last seen around 5:15 p.m. that day by passers-by, then nothing. Since the beginning of the research, the mayor of Vernet wished to allow the little boy’s family to get away the agitation of some, and the curiosity of others. Emile’s parents, sister, grandparents and 9 uncles and aunts live secluded in the family vacation home, and Haut-Vernet is officially off-limits to non-residents.
This decree should normally end July 31, 2023, but the mayor of Vernet, François Balique, announced on Tuesday August 1 that it was renewed, at least until Saturday August 5. This had already been extended for a fortnight in mid-July. “It is my duty as mayor to ensure the tranquility of my constituents and the family, which is still in Haut-Vernet, it is no secret” then explained to Figaro the mayor of the town. According to the latter, the measure of inconvenience to any of the inhabitants “because only the inhabitants of Haut-Vernet go there. There are no mushrooms or animals, no groceries either, nothing that motivates you to go there other than to go home.”

Research continues in the surroundings of Vernet
Since Monday morning, the teams in charge of the investigation have indicated that a new type of research is continuing in Vernet and its surroundings. Seven Malinois and Springer-Spaniel dogs, specialized in the search for corpses, were deployed over a 5km radius around the home of Emile’s grandparents. A military drone is also used in the area. These field excavations should continue until at least Thursday.
A magistrate in charge of the investigation explains to BFM D’ICI this Monday that a “Once the technical part is finished, the investigators will tackle the human.” Many auditions have already taken place at the Vernet, but new ones are already planned. Local farmers have been instructed not to harvest the hay, so as not to risk destroying any clues. In Vernet the situation is increasingly tense between the inhabitants and the press, omnipresent for three weeks in the hamlet. The lifeguard of the village swimming pool has also filed a complaint after seeing his name appear in full in certain media.
