Located since the end of May at Place de l’Étoile, under the windows of the town hall, this wild camp has counted up to 200 people.
The migrant camp set up for several months near the city center of Strasbourg and the subject of several passes of arms between the town hall and the prefecture, was calmly evacuated by the police on Tuesday December 6, noted journalists from the AFP. The evacuation, which began shortly after 6 a.m., was completed around 7 a.m.
Several police vehicles took up position and under the lights of a few powerful spotlights installed by the police, a few dozen agents began to go from tent to tent asking the migrants to leave the area. The operation took place peacefully. The journalists and several association activists present were kept at a distance.

45 people sheltered in a gymnasium

According to Floriane Varieras, assistant in charge of the inclusive city, there were still around fifty people left at the camp on Monday morning.

The municipality, which said on Monday that it had reached the end of what it can do in terms of accommodation, had opened a gymnasium in mid-September to shelter certain migrants. This camp was at the center of several passes of arms between the environmentalist mayor of Strasbourg Jeanne Barseghian and the prefect, Josiane Chevalier.
The latter argued that it was up to the town hall, owner of the land, to request the evacuation of the irregular camp to justice. What Jeanne Barseghian had always refused to do, already reproaching the State for not assuming its responsibilities in terms of reception.
On Monday, the elected environmentalist announced her wish to take the state to court for its “failure” to shelter people on the street, launching a national appeal to “elected” and “associationswho wish to join his action.
