The Minister of Education Nicole Belloubet wants to combat the effect of screens on adolescents. And for this, she launches the idea of a “digital break”.

While at the beginning of the 2010s, screens were seen as a potential additional educational tool to introduce into schools, in recent years they have become the bane of educators. As its harmful effect on young people has increasingly been observed, authorities around the world have started to think about ways to reduce its impact on the cognitive development of minors. In France, this could involve a “ full digital break » if we are to believe Nicole Belloubet.

Dropping off the smartphone at the college entrance, the solution?

Present at the microphone of RTL this Sunday, April 7, the Minister of Education Nicole Belloubet spoke about smartphones and adolescents. She thus explained that she was thinking about the potential establishment of a “ full digital break », which would require all middle school students to drop off their smartphone upon arrival at school, only to pick it up in the evening when they leave.

You know that theoretically, in colleges in particular, you cannot use your cell phone. But the students have them with them. I wonder if we should not proceed as in the Council of Ministers, where we leave the telephone at the entrance » she detailed.

Minister Nicole Belloubet wants an experiment

The objective here is to prevent students from having access to their phone during the entire 8 hours of class. Such a break would make it possible to make effective the ban already existing since 2018 on the use of smartphones in nursery, primary and secondary schools. Students would have the choice of either leaving their device at home or passing it on when they arrive at college.

Nicole Belloubet expressed herself in favor of an experiment, which would take place “ from the sixth. » The subject is in vogue, since the President of the Republic had already asked a committee of experts at the beginning of the year to work on measures to counter the excessive exposure of young people to screens. He will deliver his conclusions next month.
