Framework, the maker of the eponymous modular laptop, just released a new version powered by Core 12 processors.and generation of Intel.
Framework struck a chord with some consumers by promising easier repairs and component replacements with the first version of its laptop. The Californian brand is also benefiting from the growing support for the “Right to Repair” movement, as well as general consumer interest in reducing electronic waste.
Framework just announced pre-order availability for the Framework 2022 modular laptop with 12-inch Intel Core processorsand generation. Deliveries will begin in July. “We’ve redesigned our lid assembly for better rigidity and carefully optimized standby time, especially for Linux users,” the company says.
Three levels of performance
Framework launched its first 13.5-inch laptop with Intel Core 11 processorsand generation in 2021. Replaceable components included RAM, storage, battery, and keyboard. It also had a system of expansion cards to insert USB-B and USB-C, HDMI, DisplayPort, MicroSD or other inputs or slots.
On most consumer laptops, processors are usually soldered to the motherboard and therefore cannot be upgraded. But Framework’s upgradable motherboard makes it possible to upgrade to new generations of CPUs. The motherboard equipped with Intel Core processors of 12and generation costs between 439 euros and 1,288 euros, depending on performance, but for now it is only available on a waiting list.
The “base” Framework 2022 laptop, with an Intel Core i5-1240P up to 4.4 GHz and four performance cores and eight efficiency cores, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, starts at 1,199 euros. It should be delivered in August.
The “performance” Framework with an Intel Core i7-1260P processor up to 4.7 GHz and four performance cores and eight efficiency cores, 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage costs 1,649 euros. Both models come with Windows 11 Home.
The “professional” model costs 2,339 euros and has an Intel Core i7-1280P processor that can reach 4.8 GHz, six performance cores and eight efficiency cores, 32 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. It comes with Windows 11 Pro.
Pre-order in France
All models have a 13.5-inch LCD screen with a definition of 2256 x 1504 pixels, an Intel Iris Xe graphics card and a 1080p webcam at 60 frames per second. There’s a 55W battery and a backlit keyboard, the keys of which have 1.5mm travel.
The first batch of professional and performance models will ship in July.
Framework also offers “bring your own OS” options. According to the company, Fedora 36 works well out of the box, with support for Wi-Fi and fingerprint reader. Ubuntu 22.04 requires a few workarounds. The new Framework laptops are available for pre-order in France.
