The mythical GoldenEye 007 returns on January 27 on Xbox and Nintendo Switch

Back to the end of the 90s: surveying what was then called the World Wide Web is still a novelty, social networks do not yet exist, the French football team still does not wear any stars on its jersey. In these dark times, the Kyoto firm drew the Nintendo 64 to counter Sony and its first PlayStation of the name, whose 3D games (still uncommon at the time, except for simulators) impressed the crowds.

And because the best of consoles is nothing without a quality toy library, Nintendo pays particular attention to its line-up. The games available at the launch of the 64 are a delight for fans. Super Mario 64, for example, lays the groundwork for the 3D platformer, with novelties still used today in the most modern video game works. And to satisfy all player profiles, Nintendo called on Rare to develop a first person shooter based on the James Bond license; GoldenEye 007 was born and will establish itself as one of the most outstanding games of its time. Until now, no FPS (on console in any case) had aimed so accurately, both in terms of gameplay and achievement. The thrilling and demanding single-player mode (in 007 mode at least) won over many budding spies, who spent hours aiming at mobs’ knees to see them writhing in pain or trying to kill General Arkady Ourumov before the warehouse explosion. The real ones will recognize themselves!

It was enough to spend the long winter evenings in 1997.

Good news for nostalgics and video game historians, the boss is back on two platforms. Subscribers to Xbox Game Pass will therefore be able to try out the mythical levels that were the dam or the train (but how to get out of this damn wagon?), just like subscribers to the Switch Online + Additional Pack formula.

Trophies and 4K on one side, online multiplayer on the other

However, the two versions will not be quite the same. On Xbox, GoldenEye 007 gets richer with trophy system and 4K… but loses online multiplayer. Fortunately, local multiplayer is part of it, and that’s the main thing! Those who knew GoldenEye in its heyday know how battles between players have contributed to forging legends and destroying friendships. As Clovis could have said if he had had the joy of playing GoldenEye 007 : “Remember the booby-trap bulletproof vest!”

To enjoy multiplayer games with friends online, you will therefore have to turn to the Switch version. And as is the case on Xbox, local multiplayer will be present.

Sharpen the mufflers, prepare your golden guns and beware of bulletproof vests, GoldenEye 007 arrives in less than 48 hours!
