The name of the rose: the series on film classics celebrates free TV premiere

In 1986 "The Name of the Rose", the first novel by the Italian writer Umberto Eco (1932-2016), was made into a film. The book is a world hit, the award-winning film is one of the absolute classics. The action takes place in 1327 at the time of a church war. The "French" Pope John XXII resided in Avignon, who was involved in violent clashes with the German Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria and at the same time fought the Franciscans in the so-called poverty dispute.

The Franciscan monk William von Baskerville (John Turturro, 63) is confronted with a dark plot to murder in the Benedictine monastery. Baskerville, however, has a detective eye and tries to solve the secret together with his apprentice Adson von Melk (Damian Hardung, 21). The two are not only threatened by the murderer: Baskerville is also targeted by the Inquisitor Bernado Gui (Rupert Everett, 60), who pursues the Pope's critics without mercy.
