An independent advisory commission (created in 2011, it has experienced several upheavals), the National Digital Council (CNNum) communicates on its “support for the promotion of Free Software”, and affirms: “Source of conviviality, sharing, cooperation and freedom as much as the tools necessary to guarantee an open web, free software is a subject that has been close to the heart of the National Digital Council for many years. The Council is strengthening its support and joins the collective approach to promoting free software within the State and outside through several objects: Wikipedia contribution workshops, an open agenda on Framagenda, a Peertube channel and a travel map on uMap.”

The CNNum specifies:
– having organized five awareness workshops on contributing to Wikipedia, an approach presented in a post by Louis Magnes, advocacy manager at CNNum, on LinkedIn. Around the Observatory on the use of digital technology in the war in Ukraine, documentation work has been carried out, and “what better place to collaborate collectively in the aggregation and sharing of knowledge than Wikipedia?”
– open its agenda (life of the Board, events open to the public, initiatives reported, etc.) and, among other things, “show through experience that there are open, free, participatory, contributory tools that work to build knowledge common”.
– migrate to PeerTube, to distribute several contents there (interviews, presentations, etc.).
Jean Cattan, Secretary General of the National Digital Council, explains: “The National Digital Council has always been keen to support the free software and digital commons approach. The tools we are deploying today are essential for strengthening our support – through action and in total coherence with our mission as a scientific and civic forum. I am delighted that the Council is concretely joining this collective movement, which also brings a lot of pleasure.”
“The state is paradoxical”
Among the numerous publications of the CNNum, see this exchange with Angie Gaudion, of Framasoft (on the philosophy of this remarkable association, everything is to be read).
Including this passage:
“Framasoft has become an association for popular education in the challenges of digital technology and cultural commons. Our social purpose is no longer to promote free software, but to transmit knowledge, knowledge and reflection around digital practices. However, we continue to offer online services in order to demonstrate that these tools exist and are convincing alternatives to the services of the web giants. We now transmit more knowledge and know-how on these tools and support Internet users in their empowerment. vis-à-vis the giants of the web.”
“The State contributes to the commons. For example, the National Education offers the apps.education.fr page which lists a set of online educational services based on free software. But the State is paradoxical: it contributes to the commons and signs agreements with Microsoft to implement Windows on computer workstations in schools. In addition, this initiative of the National Education is very good, but it remains very unknown to the teaching staff. Beyond the contribution, there is therefore also an important promotional issue.
