The live-action series Avatar is the new Netflix sensation. An exclusivity criticized, but nevertheless taken by storm by subscribers. It thus exceeds all expectations.
Season 1 of Avatar Netflix was released on February 22, 2024, at 9:01 a.m. sharp, on the SVOD platform. A highly anticipated and feared event series by fans of the original. Upon arrival, and while the first reviews were positive, it gave a mixed reception. Indeed, on Rotten Tomatoes, the live-action show divides the press almost as much as the viewers, with respective scores of 60% and 76%. But not everyone checks the rating site or takes the feedback at face value.
The Avatar Netflix series doesn’t necessarily please, but it’s a hit
Was Netflix right to believe in the potential of Avatar: The Last Airbender? If opinions differ, and partly prove the SVOD service wrong, the first figures say the opposite. For the firm with the red N, there are essential criteria which take precedence over the rest in judging success. The number of hours watched for each film or series, and millions of views. And generally, when a program rises to the top in several countries, it’s a pretty good sign even if it’s not an exact science.
The live-action show Avatar The Last Airbender is currently number 1 in the top 10 English-speaking series in the world. In France, it is also at the top of this ranking and returns House of Ninjas to the ropes. But there is better for Netflix. During the first four days of its release, Avatar: The Last Airbender had 21.2 million views. It was the most watched program, and it is a new record which exceeds that of the One Piece series with its 18.5 million views. That’s a difference of 15%.
No doubt, subscribers were clearly there for this launch. On the other hand, we do not know whether or not they have viewed the eight episodes that make up this season 1. Now, there is still a way to go because the One Piece series occupied first place in the top 10 for three weeks in a row, and never left the rankings for eight weeks. If Avatar Netflix achieves this, a season 2 will most certainly be announced within a few weeks.
