Subscribing to Netflix will be more complex in the Apple ecosystem. To avoid the App Store commission, Netflix must route the user through an external page.
User experience is a very important concept for Apple and its ecosystem. Well, that’s true until Apple has to decide between the user experience and its financial interest.
Netflix will deploy an update to its SVOD application on iPad and iPhone which will allow the service to partially escape the App Store tax. The result will be a slightly less pleasant user experience.
Obligatory passage through the website
Now, if a user wishes to subscribe to Netflix from an iPhone or iPad, the app will redirect them to the Netflix website, where the user can terminate their membership. Remember that Netflix no longer even offered the subscription from its application in the Apple ecosystem until this update.
A message displayed on the screen warns the user that he is leaving the Apple ecosystem for the time of a transaction and that the responsibility for the operation rests entirely on the shoulders of Netflix. The service can then avoid the famous 30% commission imposed by Apple to integrate a subscription into an app on iOS.
This integration is the conclusion of legal constraints put in place on Apple over the past few months to force the firm to open its market to competitors. In April, the development of this external payment system was echoed in the press. Remember that this system concerns reader app, i.e. content consumption applications: audio, video, text or images. Other subscriptions, for office applications for example, are not affected.
Once again, we can only regret that these updates are made to the detriment of the user experience. An integration of the subscription in the application would be much more practical.
