Everything is going well for the streaming giant Netflix and its offer with advertisements. Launched in October 2022, the subscription continues to attract new users, to the point of already having several tens of millions of subscribers.

A little less than two years ago, when Netflix rolled out a new subscription plan called “Netflix Standard with advertising”, we were far from imagining that it would be such a success with subscribers to the platform. Offered at the admittedly attractive price of 5.99 euros per month, this allows you to enjoy Netflix content in return for advertising cuts.

After making a thunderous start in France, bringing together nearly 5% of French people in the space of a few weeks, the offer has since continued its merry way to attract millions of users across the world.

Netflix: the ad-supported offering now has more than 40 million users

Just yesterday, the most popular video streaming platform in the world officially announced that its ad-supported subscription offer had crossed the threshold of 40 million monthly subscribers. An explosive performance, only a year and a half after its launch, especially since this offer had almost half as many users last January (23 million). As a reminder, it only took six months to reach 5 million monthly subscribers.

Even more interesting, Netflix claims that 40% of new users choose to subscribe to the ad-supported offer in countries where the plan is available. Beyond its attractive price, remember that this offer has made it possible to view content in Full HD since last year, in addition to giving subscribers the possibility of watching films and series on two devices simultaneously.

In total, Netflix currently has 270 million subscribers.

Advertising, a new gold mine for Netflix?

At the same time, the company also took the opportunity to announce that it was developing “ an in-house advertising technology platform ”, as reported to us by The Verge. According to information relayed this time by CNBC, Netflix plans to carry out the first tests of its platform in Canada later this year, before launching it in the United States from the second half of next year. The objective would be to deploy it in the rest of the world by the end of 2025.

A little earlier today, we learned that the Netflix application for Windows would soon receive an update that frankly not everyone will like. In fact, users will soon no longer be able to download their content in order to view it offline. In addition, starting next month, Netflix should definitely draw a line under its “Essential” offer, including for those who are still subscribed to this formula.
