The new BMW i5 will be offered in all-electric mode

The eighth generation of the BMW 5 Series will make its debut by the start of the school year. Along with work on dynamism and comfort, the new model will feature the latest updates to the BMW 8.5 operating system with the BMW Curved Display, digital services and, for the first time, a purely electric powertrain.

The vehicle platform is indeed designed to be flexible and can support a whole range of engines, including micro-hybridization, plug-in hybrid and all-electric.

At the BMW Group Annual Conference 2023, Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Directors of BMW AG, further announced that the 5 Series Sedan will also be available as an all-electric BMW M Performance model. “The fully electric BMW i4 M50 shows how BMW perfectly combines dynamic performance and electric mobility”. “It was the best-selling BMW M model worldwide in 2022. A fully electric Performance model from BMW M GmbH will also be included in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan range.”

Oliver Zipse also revealed that another version would also be offered in all-electric: “The BMW 5 Series Touring is very popular, especially in Europe. From spring 2024 it will also be offered as a fully electric version, which will give us a truly unique selling point in this segment.” An interesting announcement insofar as 100% electric station wagons are currently absent from the market, except for the MG5.

The global launch of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan will take place in October 2023. It will be assembled exclusively at the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing. Located in Lower Bavaria, it is the company’s largest production site in Europe. Housing the manufacturer’s research center for the production of electric powertrains, it also manufactures electric motors and batteries.
