The new MacBook Pro M2 would arrive in early 2023

Mass production will begin in the fourth quarter of 2022. But the big question concerns above all their processors: will they still be M2s engraved in 5 nm?

Last June, during WWDC 2022, Apple presented its M2 chip. It currently equips two computers, now available for purchase, the Macbook Air M2 and Macbook Pro 13 M2. The chip should logically integrate other Apple machines, and perhaps 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros. As early as June, Mark Gurman suggested a launch of these two products in late 2022 or early 2023. In a recent tweet, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo confirms these allegations. It conjectures mass production from the fourth quarter of 2022.

M2 in 5 or 3 nm?

Ming-Chi Kuo thinks that these two machines will always be armed with an M2 engraved in 5 nm by TSMC. Other rumors, however, evoke M2 Pro or even M2 Max versions manufactured in 3 nm, still by the Taiwanese founder.

Take all this with a grain of salt, since mass production of M2 in 3 nm from the end of the year is not totally excluded. Indeed, we told you about it last April, TSMC plans to reach this milestone before 2023.

3nm chips with more GPU cores?

Clearly, there’s quite a bit of conflicting information as to Apple and TSMC’s plans at the moment. The Apple brand should clarify the situation in a few weeks during a conference centered on Macs and iPads organized next October. This could also be an opportunity for the firm to introduce new models, namely an iPad Pro M2, an iPad 10e generation and a Mac Mini M2.

For the record, the M2 mobilizes up to 8 CPU cores and 10 GPU cores. As with the M1, Apple is likely to offer upgraded versions of its SoC, the aforementioned M2 Pro and M2 Max. These could increase the number of GPU cores (up to 32) and take advantage of TSMC’s N3 node.
