The new Mastercard bank card to pay with a simple smile

Mastercard is launching a new biometric payment program. Instead of pulling out your bank card or phone, the Payface program will allow customers to pay for their purchases by smiling at the camera or waving their hand over a reader.

Soon payment with a smile or a simple wave of the hand? This is what Mastercard promises with its new biometric payment system or Biometric Checkout Program. Like unlocking your phone with the detection of your face or your fingerprint, Mastercard applies this same principle to payment. Once at the checkout, you won’t have to take out your card or mobile phone. It will suffice to smile the camera or to hand over on a reader to pay. A revolutionary extension of contactless payment.

The way we pay must evolve with the way we live, work and do business, to give consumers choice while ensuring their optimal security, said Ajay Bhalla, President Cyber & Intelligence at Mastercard in a press release.

The sensitive issue of personal data

For the moment, the pilot phase has been launched in Brazil with Payface and the St Marche supermarket chain. Customers will be able to register their face and banking information in the Payface app. Once done, they will be able to pay for their purchases in the 5 stores currently concerned, with a simple smile. The next pilot phases will take place in the Middle East and Asia.

Today, we are already working in France with issuers who use biometrics for payments via smartphones. The Biometric Check-out Program paves the way for a new use case that complements existing issuer solutions. Beyond the improved user experience, we always treat with the greatest attention the issues of protection of personal data and the fight against fraud, adds Brice van de Walle, Managing Director, Mastercard France.

Participants in the Mastercard program will invite their customers to enroll their biometric payment services for payments in store or at home. In addition, the program proposes a set of standards that must be adhered to by banks, merchants and technology providers to guarantee the security and confidentiality of personal data at the time of biometric payment.

The biometric card in France

If you cannot yet pay with a simple smile in France, it is already possible to validate your payments with your fingerprints. At least for BNP Paribas and Crdit Agricole customers. The biometric bank card contains the fingerprints of its holder, just like your biometric passport. To validate your purchase, simply place your thumb on the reader on the card itself, while you hold it up to the payment terminal. If the fingerprints match, your payment is validated.
