Updates are never without risk. The latest version of macOS has for example caused bugs for many users, particularly with USB accessories.
Your wireless mouse no longer works? Are you no longer able to print documents from your brand new Mac? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. It seems that the latest macOS update deployed by Apple (14.4) is causing significant bugs on a number of USB accessories. Unfortunately, not all of them are easily correctable.
Printers and screens with HS USB hub
Spotted by the macrumors site, the long list of bugs present on macOS Sonoma 14.4 leaves one wondering about the quality control that took place before the deployment of this update. The most restrictive bug undoubtedly concerns USB hubs which experience connectivity problems with machines running macOS Sonoma 14.4.
It seems that this mainly concerns USB hubs integrated into external screens. Practical for connecting a mouse, keyboard and other office accessories, these USB ports integrated into the screen make up for the lack of connectivity on recent Macs. With a single USB-C cable connecting the Mac to the screen, it then becomes possible to transfer a video stream and use the screen as a USB hub for all its accessories… When it works.
Version 14.4 of the OS also seems to cause problems with certain printer drivers. More specifically, it seems that the operating system deletes or corrupts certain drivers necessary for the proper functioning of certain machines. HP printers seem particularly affected, especially if they are used on a network and not with a direct connection.
Java software systematically crashes
Finally, it seems that the proper execution of certain processes relying on the Java language and ecosystem is also compromised. Many software programs crash unexplainedly, regardless of the version of Java installed on the machine. According to macrumors, no fix seems available, other than reinstalling a previous version of the OS on your machine.
If you have not yet done the update (offered since March 7, 2024) and one of these problems seems prohibitive to you, it would perhaps be wise to wait until Apple officially communicates on the subject and offers fixes to this slew of bugs. Not all Internet users on macOS are affected and it seems that some tweaks in the system settings sometimes correct the problems, but it is at your own risk.
