The Nintendo Switch 2 is getting closer, but there’s a catch

When will the Nintendo Switch 2 be officially announced? Will the console really be available in 2024? Big N maintains the suspense, but is ready to talk about the future.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has been the subject of a multitude of rumors in recent months, but that has not disrupted the Japanese manufacturer and its plans. Shuntaro Furukawa, president of Big N, only spoke late last year to indicate that these rumors “were inaccurate”. But which ones? We won’t know any more. However, Furukawa made an interesting statement during a review with the company’s shareholders. Is the video game giant really going to shelve its current console in 2024? News is coming.

Nintendo Switch 2 in 2024 or 2025?

Many players would like information on the Nintendo Switch 2, but still nothing on the horizon except more or less credible rumors. Is a release in 2024 possible? During the presentation of Big N’s results for the last quarter, Shuntaro Furukawa explained that the current Switch will be “the main activity” of the company this year. At first glance, if we are pessimistic, we might say that it is over. But Furakawa-san isn’t saying the original Switch will be the only money-making product in the coming months.

If the first hybrid console will be Nintendo’s focus for some time to come, we can imagine a launch at the end of 2024 for the next one. And it is in fact this window that comes up often. Or in the worst case early 2025. As a reminder, the existing model was put on the market in March 2017.

During his speech, Shuntaro Furukawa also said that Big N’s plans for the next fiscal year, which runs from April 2024 to March 2025, will be revealed. If we rely on the company’s habits, it will take place in May and that is when we could have news of the Nintendo Switch 2. But be careful, we are not talking about an announcement in due form. It will surely be a few weeks later with an event specially organized for the occasion. Still, mentioning the new Switch would not eat bread and would allow investors to smile.

Declining sales and the absence of large cartridges

After Shuntaro Furukawa’s statements, many people are expecting a real first teaser of the Nintendo Switch 2 next May, but it is better to temper expectations or risk being disappointed. And what can we expect from Big N’s new machine? Rumors mention a hybrid console with an 8-inch LCD screen, 512 GB storage as standard, support for Nvidia’s DLSS, or even ray-tracing supposed to be more efficient than that of PS5 and Xbox Series games. In terms of the game library, Monster Hunter Wilds, which is not released before 2025, could be part of the Nintendo Switch 2 line-up.

Rumor has it Persona 3 Reload and a compilation of the Bayonetta trilogy, with improved graphics, could also land. Beyond the rumors, we feel that the Switch is “at the end of its run”. The manufacturer sold 16.81 million Switches in 2023, which represents a drop of 12% compared to 2022. And as pointed out by analyst Oscar Lemaire, this is the third consecutive year that this has happened. In addition to declining sales, we see that there are no longer any very big hits for 2024. A clue which could indicate a release of the Nintendo Switch 2 before the end of the year.
