The recent easing of American technological restrictions could do business for Huawei, which has been under embargo since 2019 across the Atlantic.

Is it possible to review Huawei, deprived of Android, working with American companies? Nothing is set in stone yet, but the hypothesis is gaining ground. The US government has indeed relaxed, a few days ago, the restrictions which prevent the Shenzhen firm from working with companies like Google, we learn Bloomberg.

An open door for Huawei, but under conditions

Since 2019, an eternity in the world of new technologies, Huawei has been under US embargo, blacklisted and deprived of working with Uncle Sam companies. The consequences are many, and the one that the Chinese giant has had the most difficult to digest, it is obviously the end of the Android operating system on its smartphones.

But we may see some light in this case. The US Commerce Department’s Industry and Security Agency is re-authorizing certain technologies and software for release. However, and to claim technology sharing again, the companies placed on the list, such as Huawei or ZTE, will have to respect certain conditions.

We do not know the details of the conditions to be respected, which will take the form of “standards”, but they act as an open door to a last chance for Huawei, penalized by an embargo wanted by the Trump administration which the company has always considered as unfair and unjustified.

With HarmonyOS, Huawei has learned to do without Android

In any case, Huawei now knows that the American position is changing and that the firm could again use American technologies in the future. We imagine that on the side of the Chinese company, the opportunity is life-saving, even if it has learned to do without Android by bringing out its own mobile operating system, HarmonyOS, which offers an alternative to traditional OS.

Mistrust nevertheless remains on the side of Washington, where it is difficult to accept the growing role of the technological ecosystem of the Middle Kingdom, which is increasingly influential in the world. The United States has done everything in the past three years to reduce the technological competitive advantage that Chinese companies are gaining, accusing them of being a threat to their security. A discourse that is perhaps in the process of evolving.
