The nugget of French basketball, Victor Wembanyama, still brings together as many fans

The new tricolor nugget of French basketball, Victor Wembanyama, has been playing with the Metropolitans of Boulogne-Levallois since last summer. And with each game, the same story, places that sell like hot cakes for the chance to see who should go play in the NBA in a few months.

Victor Wembanyama is the new nugget of French basketball. 19 years old, 2m21 tall. The Americans dream of it but for the moment they play at home, at the Metropolitans of Boulogne-Levallois. This Friday evening, the Mets receive Dijon at the Marcel Cerdan gymnasium. And like all matches since the start of the season, the stands are packed.

Difficult to find a place to admire Wembanyama

And for good reason, he is the one they all come to admire: Victor Wembanyama. Since a tour in the United States which has toured the planet, Marcel Cerdan’s tickets have been selling like hot cakes. “We have 2,800 seats. We could have sold 6,000 more today. With a sports hall twice as large as here, we would have filled [les tribunes]. I’ve never seen that and no one else has seen it!” exclaims Alain Weisz, director of basketball operations.

Basketball fans, strangers but also stars. This year, we even saw the American actor Michael Douglas in Marcel Cerdan or Grand Corps Malade. “How can you be 2m20 and run like a winger, dribble between the legs like a leader, shoot like a three-point shooter … He’s incredible”, launches the slammer at the microphone of Europe 1. “We say to ourselves that “we have to take advantage of it. He’s there, we can see him, he’s a few meters from us and he’ll certainly be a long way from next year, on the other side of the Atlantic. He’s still a little to us, we take advantage of it.” Because from the summer of 2023, “Wemby” should take the plunge and go play in the NBA.
