If you drink, you don’t drive – the Touring Club Switzerland (TCS) reminded you of this rule on Monday with the publication of the accident statistics for 2020.
According to the data from the federal portal map.geo.admin.ch, on which the TCS is based, Geneva recorded 1.01 serious accidents per 10,000 inhabitants. The canton has topped this ranking since it was created in 2017. The TCS defines a serious accident as an accident with at least one seriously injured person.
The cantons of Thurgau (0.86), Zug (0.71), Nidwalden (0.70) and Valais (0.69) follow on the accident list. Neuchâtel ends with an average of 0.17 in 2020 and has improved significantly compared to 2019 (0.40).
More accidents despite less traffic
The TCS had expected a decline in the national average due to the numerous health restrictions and the lower volume of traffic that characterized the “Corona year” 2020. Nevertheless, this average (0.47) has increased compared to 2019 (0.44). According to TCS spokesman Laurent Pignot, this increase is “difficult to explain”.
When it comes to fatal accidents caused by drink-driving, the cantons of Vaud and Friborg are at the top of the list. There are six deaths in Vaud and three in the canton of Friborg.
This is followed by the cantons of Bern, Ticino and Solothurn, each with two fatal accidents, followed by Geneva, Lucerne, Obwalden, St. Gallen, Thurgau, Uri, Wallis and Zurich, where there was one fatal accident. Alcohol is responsible for the death of a total of 23 people on Swiss roads in 2020, compared to 20 in 2019.
