The number of arrest warrants is increasing
Authorities are looking for almost 600 right-wing extremists
While the Office for the Protection of the Constitution has observed an increase in the number of right-wing extremists in Germany, the number of open arrest warrants is also increasing. The left-wing parliamentary group in the Bundestag criticizes this and appeals to the new federal government.
The German authorities recently used an arrest warrant to search for 596 right-wing extremists. In 140 of them, the arrest warrant was based on suspicion of a politically motivated act, and nine of these people had multiple arrest warrants. This emerges from the response of the Federal Ministry of the Interior to a small question from the left-wing parliamentary group in the Bundestag. The figures reflect the status as of September 30th.
A total of 788 arrest warrants for the search against politically motivated criminals from the right-wing spectrum were recently open in various police databases. Six months earlier, 602 open arrest warrants against rights had been stored there. Several arrest warrants can be issued for one person, and only some of the arrest warrants against extremists involve politically motivated acts. 147 of those wanted are suspected of a violent crime, twelve of them are even about several such offenses. For 24 of the 147 people, the police search database Inpol-Z recorded the suspicion of a politically motivated act of violence as the reason for the arrest warrant.
The left-wing member of the Bundestag Martina Renner criticized the increase in outstanding arrest warrants. The number is an important benchmark for the new federal government. “The seriousness of the fight against extreme right-wing organization and violence is also measured by the execution of arrest warrants against neo-Nazis.”
The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has observed an increase in the number of right-wing extremists in Germany. “I can’t give any specific figures yet,” said President Thomas Haldenwang of the Funke media group recently. “But the trend is clear: the number of right-wing extremists is increasing, including those who are prepared to use violence.” The protection of the constitution also registered an increase in the number of “Reich citizens and self-administrators”, according to Haldenwang. The number of left-wing extremists has remained constant overall, but the violence-oriented is also increasing here. “In general, violence is becoming increasingly important in all areas.”

In the previous year, the number of people with right-wing extremist attitudes in Germany had risen again – this came out from the report for the protection of the Constitution for 2020. Accordingly, the number of people in the right-wing extremist spectrum grew by 3.8 percent to 33,300 people. The Office for the Protection of the Constitution estimated just under 40 percent of them as “violent, ready to use violence, supportive of violence or supportive of violence”.
