The number of computers sold around the world has been falling again in recent months, according to figures revealed by Canalys.

Times are tough for the computer industry, which experienced a first quarter of 2023 with plummeting sales. And the trend is not yet reversing, even if the decline in sales is starting to calm down a bit.

Another quarter of decline

Who says number of PCs sold in decline, says price also on the decline. If you weren’t able to take advantage of this nice opportunity in times of inflation, don’t worry, the figures for the computer sector are still pretty bad.

According to tech market analyst Canalys, the number of desktops and laptops sold in the second quarter of 2023 was down 11.5% year-on-year to 61.1 million. units having found takers during this period.

As a reminder, the decline in computer sales was even more marked during the previous phases. It was indeed -30% in the first quarter of 2023, as in the fourth quarter of 2022.

The beginning of hope?

It is precisely the comparison of these two figures that gives hope to Canalys analysts. For them, it is a sign that the market is on track for an accelerated recovery in the second half of this year “.

Conditions should be more favorable in the coming months for a return to sales growth, with “ a reallocation of dormant expenses to IT upgrades », and also the back-to-school effect, which should boost the demand for computers.

Some did not wait for a global market recovery to perform well. Thus, if a brand like Dell, which represents 16.6% of the world market, saw its sales drop by 21.9% over one year, Apple (11.1% of the market) on the contrary saw its sales explode by 50, 9% at the same time.
