The Nupes alliance will “not be able to resume”, believes Jérôme Guedj (PS)

“We will not be able to resume the coordination work” of the left-wing parties within the Nupes, decided Wednesday the socialist deputy Jérôme Guedj, definitively burying an alliance undermined by the positions taken by Jean-Luc Mélenchon on the war between Israel and Hamas. The Socialist Party decided to suspend its participation in the alliance on October 18.

“The expressions which have intervened since (…) attest to the fact that we will not be able to resume the work of coordination”, estimated the deputy for Essonne on Radio J, recalling that the parliamentary intergroup was not meeting no longer “since October 9”, two days after the bloody attacks by Palestinian Hamas against Israel. He criticized “the way in which this Nupes was, I would say, diverted, misused by the transmitters that constitute the management of La France insoumise around Jean-Luc Mélenchon” and “the strategy, the style, the permanent conflictuality that Jean- Luc Mélenchon wanted to introduce “.

Loyalty to the Nupes program

Jérôme Guedj nevertheless said he was “faithful to the program” of Nupes on which he was elected in the 2022 legislative elections. “I believe that the ecological, social, republican, in any case democratic, transformation of our country is essential” , he clarified, referring to a possible new alliance but under another name.

At the end of October, the first secretary of the PS, Olivier Faure, had already expressed doubts about the future of the New Popular Ecological and Social Union bringing together his party, LFI, the Ecologists and the PCF. “On the question of Israel – Palestine in particular, there is a form of excess, of differences which must be resolved,” he assured. The national secretary of the PCF Fabien Roussel had also decreed the death of Nupes on November 8: “La Nupes is buried, it’s over,” he declared on France 2.
